NYTF Radio
In today’s episode, we interview NYTF Associate Artistic Director Motl Didner who, with Zalmen Mlotek, is in the midst of putting together A Yiddish Renaissance: A Virtual Concert Celebration.
Motl took the time out of his day for a conversation titled “Putting It All Together,” a full-on in-depth look at the behind-the-scenes making of A Yiddish Renaissance: A Virtual Concert Celebration. Did you know that there are over 140 singers, musicians, and artists working together to make this concert for your entertainment? It’s quite the process! Motl gives us a breakdown of how the idea was hatched, all the pieces that go into making such a spectacular musical event, and the close bond that the Folksbiene has fostered with its massive artistic mishpokhe, or family!
Finally, we discuss the rise of Yiddish in popular culture. In addition to Motl’s delightfully educational web series, 15 Minute Yiddish (more or less!), Duolingo has recently added Yiddish to its curriculum, with a quarter-million registered Yiddish learners! You can even see Yiddish culture portrayed in the hit Netflix series, Shtisel and Unorthodox. Motl gives us an in-depth timeline that chronicles the events that lead up to the Yiddish Renaissance.
